Detailed Explanation
ADA specifies mounting height for tactile signs as 48 to 60 inches Above Finish Floor (AFF) measured to the baseline of the lowest tactile character and no higher than 60 inches to the baseline of the highest character. This height range allows people who are blind or have low vision to locate signs by touch while standing. The measurement is to the baseline of the characters, not the bottom or center of the sign itself.
Examples
- •Restroom sign mounted so lowest character baseline is at 48 inches
- •Room number sign with highest character baseline at 60 inches max
- •Measurement from finish floor, not subfloor or carpet pad
Common Misconceptions
- ⚠️ Measurement is to CHARACTER BASELINE, not sign bottom or center
- ⚠️ Both minimum (48") and maximum (60") must be met
- ⚠️ "AFF" means Above Finish Floor - the walking surface, not subfloor
