    Latch Side

    Definition

    What is Latch Side?

Latch SideThe side of a door where the latch/handle is located, where tactile signs must be mounted.

    ADA 703.4.2CA Title 24 11B-703.4.2

    Detailed Explanation

The latch side of a door is the side where the door handle, knob, or latch mechanism is located (as opposed to the hinge side). ADA requires tactile signs to be mounted on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door so that a person approaching can locate the sign without interference from the door swing. The sign must be positioned so a person can approach within 3 inches of the sign without encountering the door or door hardware.

    Examples

    • Sign mounted on the right wall if door handle is on the right
    • Minimum 6 inches from door frame to prevent overlap with hardware
    • Approaching person can read sign without door blocking access

    Common Misconceptions

    • ⚠️ Latch side is NOT the hinge side - check where the handle is
    • ⚠️ Sign placement depends on door swing direction as well
    • ⚠️ Some door configurations require alternative mounting per ADA exceptions
