Restroom Signs FAQ
What ADA requirements apply to restroom signs?
ADA restroom signs must include tactile (raised) characters, Grade 2 Braille, a 70% minimum contrast ratio, and be mounted 48-60 inches AFF on the latch side of the door. California Title 24 also requires geometric symbols: a circle for women and a triangle for men.
Are Braille restroom signs required by law?
Yes. Under both the ADA 2010 Standards (Section 703) and California Title 24 (11B-703), all permanent room identification signs including restroom signs must include Grade 2 Braille positioned below the corresponding tactile text.
How high should a restroom sign be mounted?
Restroom signs must be mounted with the baseline of the lowest tactile character at minimum 48 inches and maximum 60 inches above the finish floor (AFF). The sign must be on the latch side of the door, at least 6 inches from the door frame.
