The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design replaced the original 1991 standards and became mandatory for new construction and alterations on March 15, 2012. These standards are issued by the Department of Justice and cover all aspects of accessible design including signage requirements in Section 703. The 2010 standards apply to all "places of public accommodation" and "commercial facilities" under Title III of the ADA.
